Profile of the Executive Mayor

Cllr Mzwandile Vaaiboom

Councillor Mzwandile Vaaiboom is the Chief Whip of Council at Buffalo City Metro Municipality. He started getting involved in politics in 1986 at the age of 13, "It was in 1986 when I was recruited to join Mzintshane Youth Organisation, a Cultural and Sport Organisation organising youth at the village. Mzintshane Youth Organisation was affiliated to Dimbaza Youth Congress (DYCO). It was through the activities of that Organisation in which I was introduced to the National Struggle against apartheid in 1987."

Vaaiboom played an active role in the re-launch of the ANC Youth League in 1992 and in student movements led by the Congress of South African Student (COSAS) whilst schooling at Amahleke Senior Secondary School.

In 1991, he joined the African National Congress (ANC), Mzintshane Branch, before the 1994 General Elections he was trained as a Party Agent of the Branch Elections Team(BET) and during the election programme he was elected as BET coordinator.

In 1995 he was recruited to the South African Communist Party(SACP) and established a Branch at Mzintshane. Later in 2000 a Ward based SACP Branch ; Dora Tamana was established.

Vaaiboom has led in the ANC since 2005 as a Branch Deputy Secretary until 2012 as a BCMM IRC member,he then led in the SACP as Branch Secretary from 2000 till 2005 and he was also a local secretary for POPCRU and COSATU.

Vaaiboom holds a Certificate in Office Administration, Certificate in Communication and Journalism, Certificate in Disaster Management, Diploma in Business Management (one year), Advanced Diploma in Human Resources Management and is currently studying towards obtaining a National Diploma in Local Government Law and Administration.

He worked for SAPS as a Personnel Officer, Principal Personnel Officer and also worked as a Senior Communication Officer.

ANC Branch deployed Vaaiboom to contest Ward Committee positions where he worked with ANC Ward Cllr (Cde S.E Tyilo) as a Ward Committee for two terms.

He was then deployed as a PR Councillor in Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality in 2011 and assigned with the responsibility to work as the ANC Whip Secretary where he served Health and Public Safety Standing Committee; Chairperson of a Council Adhoc Committee on refinement of Ernest Young Recommendations and Member of Multi-Party Committee chaired by Speaker on functioning of Ward Committees. He was also deployed by Council to serve as a Board member of Mayibuye Bus Transport Corporation in 2012-2015 and he is now serving as Provincial Chairperson of Department of Home Affairs Stakeholders Forum.

In 2015 July, ANC redeployed him as the ANC Chief Whip of the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality.
